Read it for what it says, not what you want it to. I'd like to help correct the countless errors propagated across the world through sloppy or agenda-pushing interpretations of scripture. Doctrinal error and doctrinal obsession are everywhere becaue people get ---- up on their own ideas, or have pride and ignore the Prov. 3:5-6 principle. Jesus said, in John 16:12-13, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come." (NKJV)
So, when reading and studying the Bible, it's vital that we humble ourselves and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us and to help us to understand- otherwise, we're left to our own understanding (again, see Prov. 3:5-6) or else to have a teacher, denomination, etc. explain it- which means that anything they teach us that's incorrect will also be taken in by us along with whatever they're right about. That's the inherent problem with learning Bible doctrines from men- any errors they have, you also get. It's critical for us to read the Bible for ourselves, asking God to help us understand what we read. Objective study aids like Bible dictionaries, etc. are also very useful, insofar as they remain objective, and not based on opinions or the writer's own doctrinal/denominational position, etc.
